Personal Development

Over the weekend I attended Lisa Nichols’ Speak and Write for Millions, Motivating the Masses seminar in beautiful San Diego.

I fell in love with Personal Development Seminars when I was 24 years old, by accident really.  My boyfriend at the time heard about a seminar called the Landmark Forum that could help with his business goals.  I tagged along to support him.  Little did I know how it would change the trajectory of my life.

First day, first conversation was about integrity.  I was so curious.  I’ve never been in a class where they talked about integrity as the topic.  Over the 3 day course, I had many breakthroughs and aha moments.  But the biggest gift I received was to see that being adopted didn’t mean I was unwanted.  Being adopted didn’t mean my Korean family didn’t love me.  Being adopted didn’t mean I was doomed with loneliness.  I cried, laughed and fell in love with humanity that weekend.  And of course Personal Development.

I continued non-stop for 5 years.  Seminar after seminar, even becoming an Introduction to the Forum Leader for the Asian Community, which was a huge breakthrough because I led those introductions with the loud conversation in my head of ‘not being Asian enough’.

After I stopped participating, I was busy living life.  I participated every 3-5 years and it was ok with all that was happening in my life.

But what I noticed was that every time I took a course, I would get super conscientious of what others thought of me taking another course.  Is she that messed up that she needs to take another seminar? was my dialogue in my head.  So I limited my sharing about what I was doing.

With the popularity of Youtube, I could indulge in Personal Development on my own, 5 minutes at a time, with no judgement.  The amount of Personal Development material available on Youtube is phenomenal!!  But let me tell you, watching those videos is nothing compared to a live event.  There is nothing like the real life experience of feeling the love and energy of the people in the room and the connections you make.

So when I attended the Personal Development seminar this weekend, my mind was blown again and again and again.  One of the biggest take away from this weekend was that I needed to find my tribe of like minded people who love learning, who dream of being a better person, who is going after their dreams even if they have no idea what they are doing.  What I found was my Home.  My people.

I am hear to tell you that ANYTHING you want in life is possible through Personal Development, if you are willing to do the work.  But you can’t do it alone (and even if you could, who would want to do it alone?) or from the same mindset that got you where you are now.  You have to take action.

So what action will you take to better your life?

  1. Hi Mea. I’m a believer too. I think we are all works in progress, and if we’re not learning and growing, then we start to move backwards. Personal development is a lifetime thing – over and over again. And when we reach perfection in this world, we get to move on to another and learn even more. It’s a really good thing to be a lover of learning.
